A little about the Valais
"The cutest sheep in the WORLD"
Valais sheep, also known as Valais Blacknose sheep, originated in the Valais region of Switzerland. This breed has been around since the 15th century and is well-adapted to the mountainous terrain of the Swiss Alps. They are known for their distinctive black faces, spiral horns, and fluffy white wool.
The breed was officially recognized by the Swiss Sheep Breeding Association in the mid-20th century. Over time, Valais sheep were exported to other countries, including the United Kingdom, Germany, and New Zealand2. The breed made its way to North America in the 21st century, with the first purebred Valais Blacknose sheep being born in the United States in 2021.
The introduction of Valais sheep to the United States involved a breed-up program, where imported semen from purebred Valais rams was used to breed selected ewes. This process helped establish a population of Valais sheep in the country, and now they are available for purchase at Barites Veteran Ranch.
